Margo was our leading "Lassie"; full of love for everyone she met.  She created more school spirit with her smile and energy bringing classmates to their feet every sports activity I ever went to.  She was a warm person, genuine, and she made everyone feel welcome at Helix.
Margo and Byron lived the American Dream; falling in love as high school sweethearts, football hero and admired cheerleader, then on to marriage, creating a beautiful family with children and grandchildren. They had many wonderful friends and family members to share their activities and to go places together. Margo lived life to the fullest, filled with faith for her God where she found the peace and love she needed to continue her journey.
Reunion planning was always more fun with Byron and Margo helping make our events special.  This will be the toughest one without her physical presence, but knowing Margo, she is smiling knowing we are doing our job bringing everyone home for this 50th special event.  I honor her at this special time, because of her, the spirit of the Highlanders will always be strong. We will remember Margo with love and a smile knowing she is busy doing her thing somewhere else, probably planning her own get together with our other classmates that are no longer with us.  We love you Margo, this one's for you!

Cyndee said it all.  Margo was always friendly, even to some of us that she barely knew.  If you said "hi" to her in the hallway, she always responded with a smile.  She was a beautiful person, inside and out.  I am so happy that she and Byron had such a love story; that is rare in this day and age.

I always thought of Margo as our class's "official" cheerleader!  As it has been said by other class members above, she is a very special Spirit for us to reflect upon, each and every day of our lives.  Her life and love meters were always turned onto "full", and she shared her knowledge of love with everyone she met.  A true reflection of the love she maintained in her heart.  You are with us in Spirit, dear Margo!  We will never forget you!

Margo Gwendolyn Flashaar Olander

April 10, 1947-October 6, 2012

Margo was born in Coral Gables, Florida.  Two of her favorite moves were to Whidbey Island, Washington and Kodiak, Alaska.  In the eighth grade Margo met Linda Wilson who got Margo more involved in school functions. It was in Mrs. King's Biology Class she met Byron who she asked to disect her frog for a class assignment. They were high school sweethearts and loved by the entire class.

She was the sweet, adorable cheerleader and he was the star football halfback athlete.  Two years after high school they were married.  Five years later they started their family with two sons; David and Mike.  Margo worked at San Diego State and loved to camp, they borrowed tents and shared camping spots with friends  She also made jewelry for friends and enjoyed the craft.

Margo loved to talk to people, whether they were in the grocery line or on a trolley.  She had such a beautiful outlook on life, it was her love for her family that bound her family together.  It was her unyielding love for Byron and her strong love and pride for her sons that molded them into the fine young men they are today. It was her love and strength that held the family together and is what the family will carry forward.

Margo's faith in Christ is where she gathered her strength.  When life's difficulties were laid on her, she would place them in the hands of God. She now walks in the garden that we all are welcome to walk in, sharing in God's love for all of us.  She will be missed but never forgotten, she was the heart and soul of the Helix Pep Rallies and our Leading Lassie.  Her smile was warm and contagious.  We thank God for the gift of Margo's life.

Margo and Byron Olander were our neighbors twice!  The first time in lakeside in the 70's. We would get each other's Mail because we had the same house number and our streets were back to back.   The second time in El Cajon while walking our daughter to the bus stop Margo drove by and said " What are you doing here"?  I said we live here!  Turns out right across the street!  Our children grew up playing together. We had 4th of July Block parties, Halloween parties and poker parties ( Margo loved to gamble) .  Most of all I remember Margo for the dear sweet person she was.  Always positive, always seeing the good in everyone.

Margo was always the one who had the uninterupted moment to share both her time and herself, selflessly, with anyone who needed her.  I grew up in La Mesa and went to LME, but later went to a  private school for 5 years.  When I came back, I was in my sophmore year at Helix.  The private school had only a handfull of students, and our Helix class had 659 (I think) kids our age.  I didn't think that there that many of us in all of California, let alone Helix.  She was always so kind, and helpful to me.  Then one day, she just kept going through my mind.  I hadn't thought about her in years.  An email came about her passing, and I knew I had to attend her service.  The church was full, and the minister was in tears as he said he didn't know how they would manage without her. Afterwards, I found Byron and told him that Margo had been "visiting" me for days, and I wanted him to know that she was alright.  You know, his answer was:  "you, too"?  Love you Margo
