Howard where did you go? It seems we were talking just two years ago. You left a legacy ofpublic service as  Deputy Sheriff, and proud caretaker of a 57' chevy. Miss you.

Howard and I "served" in Cub Scouts together.  We had many fun scout meetings at his house at the bottom of Arizona Avenue.  He was one of the kids who lived on "the hill" that we palled around with from early childhood through High School.  Others you might remember were Dave and Carl Tiedeman, Mike Travis, Bill Miller, Randy Scott, Terry Lanier, Barbara Daigle, Sharon Homan, Eddie and Pat McDonald et al.

Howard was a good guy and fondly remembered by any that knew him.

RIP

HOWARD J. BRUST

November 2, 1946 - December 5, 2013

Howard John Brust was born Saturday, November 2, 1946 in Pennsylvania, son of the late William K. and Helen F. Scanlon Brust.  He was a 25 year resident of Riverside, CA.

Saturday, January 2, 1971 was a very special day, Howard met the love of his life; Valerie Lawrence and from that day forward they were inseparable.  They were married Saturday, August 11, 1973 sealing their love forever.  Together they had a wonderful life over the next forty years and were blessed with two daughters; Rebecca Lynn and Tracy Helen.

Howard had quite a variety of hobbies including; baseball, camping, fishing, farming, hot rods, boating and water skiing (driving the boat not skiing).  All American Soap Box racing was another passion of his.  In fact, when his girls outgrew the sport, he came up with the idea of organizing a derby program for "at risk" children, teamed up with deputies as their mentors for the races.

On Monday, July 19, 1971 with "Great Pride", Howard became a Deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.  It was a career he truly loved.  The list of awards and commendations is long.  The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department was in his heart as a second family. Howard retired as a Sergeant Tuesday, October 1 2002.

Howard passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013 in Riverside, California at the age of 67 years.  He will be remembered by his beloved wife, Valerie Ann Brust, loving children Rebecca Lynnn Cocova, Tracy Helen Flaum and her husband Dana Lawrence; precious grandchildren, Marcus John Cocova and Jordan Taylor Flaum.  He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Mae Warren.

I also went to elementary school with Howard, I was in the same class starting in kindergarten as Mike Dodson, John German etc.   I especially remember Howard in the 4th grade and then reconnected with him in our Jr. year when I moved back from Oregon and then again as adults in 1999.  It is sad that he won't be with us for this reunion, the Howard I knew loved this stuff more than anyone I have ever met

I remember Howard, especially in 6th grade with Mr. Ashton. Howard did something and Mr. Ashton threw him out the classroom door at Maryland Avenue Elementary. Howard was a great friend and public servant. I'm sure he is in a better place.

I do remember Howard, and I think he was in some of my classes at LaMesa Elem.  But, I was in Mrs. Olsen's first grade class that year, so I'm not in this picture.  I got in trouble for talking too much.  RIP, Howard...

I remember hanging out with Howard at his house off of Lake Murray Blvd. My grandparents had an egg ranch up the road about a mile near the entrance to Lake Murray. That was when it was still ' country ' out there. We would mess around down at his place or hike up to the ranch and find a dozen things to get into. Long ago memories.
