I saw this when it was new. Very sad but inspiring. Should be "required reading" for all of us classmates. Many thanks to Mike Lemmo for locating it on Youtube.

John was one of my classmates at UCSD after graduating from Helix, and we had many good times together, surfing and studying, working part-time at Scripps Institution of Oceanography together, partying and protesting. We stayed in touch after college, and I saw him last only a year or so before he was killed in El Salvador, on one of his last trips to the U.S.  In the late 1980s, my wife curated a show of his work at the Grove Gallery at UCSD entitled Two Faces of War, which was also shown at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art along with the documentary film about him by David Helvarg mentioned above. In 1994, my wife was editing the newsletter for Thurgood Marshall College at UCSD, where John finished his studies, and I wrote an article about him for that publication, addressed to the current students there. I have it archived on one of my websites if anyone is interested in reading it: http://members.rennlist.com/tweedt/JohnH.htm

He was a great person, a man of conscience, and completely fearless in his pursuit of truth and justice. I still miss him deeply. I have been fortunate to stay in touch with his son, Eros, who is following in his footsteps: http://www.eroshoagland.com/
